Ten Shin Ichi Ryu™ Kendo studies the true way of the sword which ancient Samurai followed. It emphasizes the importance of respect, appreciation of human life and harmonious relationships with others. Ken means 'sword' in Japanese and Do translates as 'way' or "The way of the sword."
Skill in swordsmanship provides the ability to protect one's life. Kendo practioners train with a "shinai" (bamboo sword). Kendo provides a way to effectively study sword concepts without risking serious injury to oneself or others. Kendo study teaches strategy, quick movement and focus. Along with numerous kendo techniques and footwork, TSIR kendo uses a unique protection method called "Yon Po." Kendo does not use a sharp sword ("katana") as Iaido study does. Sparring with shinai encourages quick footwork and teaches development of quick reflexes. Doshu holds Kendo training in both group and private instruction.
